You and your parent or loved one have found a senior living community, and you’re ready for the big move. Now, you want to ensure your loved one enjoys their new home and has a smooth transition.

1. Set them up with a smartphone or tablet
   Set up a smartphone or tablet with all of the apps they may need, including video calling and social media. This will help them keep in touch with you and their loved ones. You can also setup games, music, or reading subscriptions you know they’ll love.
   
   
2. Join them for a meal or program
   At most senior living communities, you should be welcome to join your loved one for a meal or at one of the many programs. Ask for a copy of the activity calendar so that you can join your loved one for an activity you’ll both enjoy.
   
   In the early days, join them for a meal and invite other residents to sit with you. It could be the start of a beautiful friendship!
   
   
3. Help them decorate their new suite
   There’s no place like home. When they first move in, help your loved one move furniture and frame beloved photos to bring their suite to life. You can also make sure they have some of their favourite treats — like a brand of tea, or chocolate bar — to bring them comfort as they settle in.
   
   
4. Take trips or outings
   No matter how lovely the residence, there will be times when your loved one may want to leave for a bit. A trip to the lake, or even a playground to watch their grandchildren playing, can be a welcome change from the community space.
   
   
5. Collaborate with senior living staff
   The staff and administration of the senior living community are your allies when it comes to ensuring your loved one has excellent care. You will be talking to them frequently, particularly early on. It takes some time for new residents to settle in and the staff will need to get to know them and understand their likes and dislikes.
