What is assisted living?

Assisted living offers residents the security of knowing their care needs will be met in a warm, welcoming environment. In assisted living, care is delivered in the privacy of a resident’s suite. Depending on their needs, residents may receive minimal assistance or an enhanced comprehensive care program. Either way, they are then encouraged to live their life as independently as possible.

Along with a network of peers and numerous opportunities for socialization, assisted living offers residents fitness and leisure activities. Seated fitness classes and personalized plans tailored to residents’ fitness needs all help with mobility and allow residents to retain their independence longer. Leisure activities, such as learning seminars, live entertainment, art classes, spiritual sessions, and more are offered several times a day. Residents can attend any activities that interest them, but are free to spend their time how they like — perhaps playing cards with new friends over coffee or enjoying a book in their suite.

Assisted living also eliminates the need for additional housekeeping and meal delivery services. Along with medical care, having good nutrition and a clean home go a long way in preserving the wellbeing of residents.

Assisted living at a retirement residence usually includes:

  • Three chef-prepared meals per day, plus snacks and beverages. These may be served on a designated assisted living floor so that residents do not need to navigate the entire building.
  • 24-hour emergency response and security features
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
  • A unique care plan, which will be developed based on the amount and type of care the resident needs
  • Care provided in the comfort and privacy of the resident’s suite
  • Assistance with personal care
  • Leisure and fitness programs dedicated to assisted living residents and designed to support the resident’s safety, comfort, and wellness goals
  • Access to all amenities, including frequent excursions, live entertainment, and services designed to enrich the resident’s lifestyle

Different retirement homes may offer different levels of care. Some will have dedicated assisted living floors or buildings, designed to provide residents with near-complete care, while others offer partial care.
